Vitamins and minerals are substances that are found in foods that we eat. There are two types of vitamins: fat-soluble and water-soluble. When you eat foods that contain fat-soluble vitamins, the vitamins are stored in the fat tissues in your body and in your liver. They go and wait around in your body fat until your body needs them. Fat-soluble vitamins stay in your body for a while – some stay for a few days while others can stay for as long as six months. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble vitamins.
Water-soluble vitamins are different. When you eat foods that have water-soluble vitamins, they don’t get stored as much in your body. Instead they travel through your bloodstream and whatever your body does not use comes out when you urinate. So these type of vitamins need to be replaced often. This crowd of vitamins includes vitamins C and the big group of B vitamins –B (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), Niacin, B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, B12 (cobalamine), biotin and pantothenic acid.
Vitamin and mineral, especially multiple vitamin and mineral supplements contain a variable number of essential and/or non-essential nutrients. A multivitamin & mineral supplement’s primary purpose is to provide a convenient way to take a variety of supplemental nutrients from a single product in order to prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies, as well as to achieve higher intake of nutrients believed to be of benefit above typical dietary levels.
A multivitamin/mineral supplement should not replace a healthy, well-balanced diet, but it will help prevent deficiencies that often arise in the human body due to a variety of reasons.
Vitamins and Minerals can be taken in either tablet or capsule dosage form. The best time to take vitamins and minerals is with meals.
